📝 Description
Capital gain calculation requires knowing the total value of your portfolio at each taxable disposal. If the price of a token is not retrieved by Waltio on the date of disposal, your portfolio will not be correctly valued.
We use data aggregator services from Coingecko to assign the exact price to each of your transactions.
Reasons why the price is not retrieved:
Today's transactions have no price because the data is not yet accessible from our data provider.
It may be a token whose value has changed significantly and you need to modify the price of your transactions.
To value crypto prices, we base ourselves on a daily average of the price retrieved from the various aggregators.
📂 Correct missing prices
First, go to your corrections page, then filter your warnings to "Prices to confirm".
Method 1: The retrieved token price is incorrect
The retrieved price may be associated with the wrong token. Look at the retrieved prices and click on the one that corresponds to your token.
In this example, the retrieved price is associated with the wrong token. Indeed, I have SDT in stock which is actually the "Stake Dao" token and not "Stabledoc". These two tokens have the same ticker.
I then go to Coingecko to retrieve the correct price on the date concerned (here August 31, 2022).
I enter the price of €0.47 in the box and press the enter key.
Well done, your price has been updated! 🎉
Method 2: The retrieved price is still not correct
You may have purchased tokens that were not yet listed on major price aggregators like Coingecko on the date of your purchase.
Click on the blue "Open DexScreener" button, then search for the price of the token on the date concerned.
The price of the Krill token is $0.00089, which is approximately €0.00089.
If you want to be very precise, you can convert the price in $ on that date to €. Go to this site: https://www.zonebourse.com/bourse/devises/convertisseur/USD-EUR, then enter the value of your token in $ and the date of your transaction.
Finally, enter the price indicated in the associated box, then press the enter key.
Well done, your price has been updated! 🎉
Method 3: The token is unknown or a Scam
Sometimes you receive tokens in your decentralized wallets or even on your exchanges that you have never purchased.
You should add these tokens to your "scam" list by clicking on the blue "Add to scam tokens" button.
📁 Manually modify the price of a transaction
Correct on the "My transactions" page by following these steps:
Click on the transaction in question to display the transaction details.
Bring up the price comparator (by scrolling to the bottom of the page, right side of the screen).
Modify the price of the token in question using Coingecko, for example. You should use the daily average.
💡 If the price has a decimal, you must use a dot "." and not a comma ",".
In the event that a token had no price, we recommend assigning a price corresponding to 0.00001 because it is not possible to assign a price of 0 to a token in our tool.
If your token has no price, then you must, in good faith, estimate it. In most cases, unlisted tokens are worthless or very low value tokens.
📁 Wrapped tokens and interest-bearing tokens
Some tokens do not have their own price but follow the value of the asset they represent on a 1:1 basis. They should neither be classified as Scam nor set to 0: enter the price of the underlying asset.
To find the underlying asset, remove the protocol prefix from the token name:
Token received | Protocol | Underlying | Price to enter |
AETHWBTC | Aave | BTC | BTC price |
AETHLINK | Aave | LINK | LINK price |
aUSDC / AETHUSDC | Aave | USDC | USDC price |
WBTC | Wrapped | BTC | BTC price |
WETH | Wrapped | ETH | ETH price |
stETH / wstETH | Lido | ETH | ETH price |
cETH | Compound | ETH | ETH price |
cDAI | Compound | DAI | DAI price |
👉 Example: The WBTC token is a wrapped version of BTC. Its value tracks BTC: enter today's BTC price.
📁 Debt tokens
When you borrow on a protocol like Aave or Compound, a debt token is issued to your wallet (example: variableDebtEthWBTC). This token represents a debt, not an asset you own. A loan and its repayment are not taxable events in themselves.
The proper method is to set the transaction status to non-taxable. Do not attempt to value the debt token. Open the borrowing transaction, then the repayment transaction, and change their status from taxable to non-taxable. As a result:
the incoming debt token does not count as an acquisition;
its outgoing repayment does not count as a disposal;
no line impacts your capital gains calculation.
Depending on your country:
👉 France: you can enter 0.0000001 for the VARIABLEDEBT token. This value is negligible and does not affect the calculation, as the French method relies on the overall portfolio value.
👉 Other countries: the price entered for the token does not matter, as long as the associated withdrawals and trades are correctly marked as non-taxable. This labeling ensures that no false capital gains are generated.
⚠️ Tokens that should not be classified as Scam
Even if no price was fetched, these tokens are legitimate:
Interest-bearing tokens (Aave aTokens, Compound cTokens): underlying asset price.
Wrapped assets (WBTC, WETH, wstETH, renBTC): underlying asset price.
LP tokens from known protocols (Uniswap, Curve, 1inch, Balancer): see the dedicated article on LP token pricing.
Debt tokens: worthless, but legitimate.
Staking or restaking receipts (rETH, cbETH, eETH): underlying asset price.
Recent or low-liquidity tokens that are genuine: check DexScreener, then enter the price in good faith.
Reserve the Scam label for unsolicited airdrops received without any purchase transaction, phishing tokens (names mimicking a brand, linking to a fraudulent site), and tokens mass-sent without consideration.
💡 Concrete examples
AETHWBTC: received when depositing WBTC on Aave, enter the WBTC price.
AETHLINK: received when depositing LINK on Aave, enter the LINK price.
WETH: wrapped version of ETH, enter the ETH price.
variableDebtEthWBTC: Aave borrowing debt, no price to enter, mark both borrowing and repayment as non-taxable.
USDC-reward.com token received without purchase: Scam label.
