Tax return - France - Form 2086

How to interpret the figures calculated by Waltio on my 2086 tax form?

📝 Description

Discover how to understand and make full use of your annual taxable cryptocurrency transactions attachment (Form 2086) generated by Waltio to file your income tax return with peace of mind.

📂 Understanding your 2086 form

Form 2086 is where you report your taxable crypto trading activities carried out during the year. In France, taxable disposals fall into two categories:

  • Selling crypto for fiat currency (e.g. selling BTC for EUR)

  • Paying in crypto for a good or service.

💡 If you have not carried out any such transactions during the year, Waltio will generate an empty form.

Lines of Form 2086

Title

Meaning

212

Overall portfolio value

Total value of all your digital assets at the exact moment of the taxable disposal, across all your storage solutions (exchanges, wallets).

213-218

Disposal price

Actual amount received from the sale. Adjusted for cash adjustments / equalization payments (increased if received, reduced if paid) and net of transaction fees incurred.

220

Total portfolio acquisition price (Gross)

Sum of all your "Cash-ins" (cryptocurrency purchases made with fiat currency) carried out before the disposal.

221

Initial capital fractions

Portion of initial investment already consumed during previous taxable disposals. It is deducted from the total acquisition price to calculate the net acquisition price. If equal to 0, no prior disposals occurred.

222

Cash adjustment received

Amount of cash adjustments received during previous exchanges involving cash adjustments, which reduces the acquisition price.

223

Total portfolio acquisition price (Net)

Result of the following formula: 220 - 221 - 222

PNL

Taxable capital gain or loss

Result of the following formula: 218 - [(223 x 217) / 212]

💡 Good to know

  • Tax rounding rules: The tax authority does not accept decimal numbers. Waltio therefore generates the attachment using rounded figures. Calculations on the online tax portal impots.gouv.fr may show a difference of a few euros compared to Waltio's result, which has no impact on the validity of your tax return.

  • €305 Exemption threshold: If the total sum of your disposal prices is equal to or less than €305 in the tax year across the entire tax household, your capital gains are exempt. You do not need to pay tax on these capital gains. ⚠️ This does not exempt you from declaring them. All taxable operations must be reported on the form.

  • Transactions under €0.50: Taxable disposals under €0.50 are not displayed on the form. The tax authority rounds them down to €0, so they do not appear on Form 2086 and do not need to be reported.

  • Negative disposal price: A disposal price cannot be negative. If this anomaly appears, compare your Master Ledger with the source file provided by your exchange.

  • Hidden cells: If certain cells in your file appear empty, remember to expand the columns in your spreadsheet software (Excel, Google Sheets).

  • Transactions prior to January 1, 2019: Taxable transactions conducted before this date are not taken into account. For investments made prior to 2019, we retrieve the portfolio value as of 01/01/2019 as the total acquisition price.

📤 Frequently asked questions

Why is my 2086 form empty?

  • This means we do not detect any taxable trading activity carried out during this year.

  • If you are certain you performed such transactions, it might mean some transactions are missing. You can check your Accounts page to ensure everything has been added to Waltio, as well as your Transactions page.

Why do I see gains when my 2086 form is empty?

My total acquisition price (line 220) does not match with reality. What can I do?

  • ⚠️ It is important to note that FIAT > CRYPTO exchanges and crypto deposits tagged with Buying Crypto are the only transactions that increase your acquisition price. Simple FIAT deposits on your exchange do not count, as the triggering event is converting FIAT to CRYPTO.

  • On your Transactions page, use the filter Transaction > is cash-in to review the transactions that make up your total investment amount.

  • If your investment total is missing data, some crypto deposits might need to be labeled Buying Crypto, or some transactions might be missing > Check that you have added all your exchange accounts and wallets to Waltio.

  • If the investment total is too high, there might be duplicate transactions or deposits that shouldn't be tagged as Buying Crypto.

My portfolio value (line 212) looks incorrect. What can I do?

  • Make sure you have added all your exchange accounts and wallets to Waltio.

  • This could be due to an incorrectly valued token or a token with a missing price. Check if you have any Price to fill in warnings.

  • If you have negative balance warnings on certain platforms, their balance will be valued at 0, which can incorrectly lower your portfolio value.

💡 To help you investigate:

  1. Go to your Transactions page, under the Taxable Transactions tab, and click on the transaction where the portfolio value looks incorrect.

  2. In the details, click on the Portfolio Value tab and then on Calculate portfolio value.

  3. You will then see the exact breakdown of tokens in your portfolio, their values, and identify which tokens or platforms are causing the issue.

💡 When in doubt, do not hesitate to contact Waltio customer support.
